The Honors Academy Library program is designed around the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) National School Library Standards and the Future Ready Librarian framework. Our goal is to cultivate an enriching, student-centered library experience that inspires a love of reading, encourages creativity, and fosters critical thinking skills.
Standards-Based Learning:Library classes at Honors Academy feature carefully selected read-aloud stories tailored to the developmental levels of our students:
  • Primary Grades (K-2): Read-alouds emphasize curiosity, basic inquiry, and empathy, nurturing young students' natural interest in reading and exploration.
  • Elementary Grades (3-5): Stories chosen for this group encourage deeper critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration. Students actively engage in discussions, exploring diverse perspectives and global awareness.
  • Middle School (6-8): Read-aloud selections at this level focus on ethical use of information, digital citizenship, and advanced critical inquiry. Students analyze texts deeply, reflecting on broader social and cultural contexts.
Open Center Time:Each library class also includes dedicated "Open Center Time," where students can freely explore:
  • Collaborative Activities: Games and challenges that require teamwork, problem-solving, and effective communication.
  • Fine Motor Skills Development: Hands-on activities such as puzzles, building blocks, free choice art area, and chess, designed to improve students' fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
  • Personal Inquiry and Exploration: Students choose from various inquiry-based stations, allowing them to explore personal interests using books and creative materials, aligning with our student-led learning philosophy.
This approach ensures every student at Honors Academy not only develops essential literacy and information skills aligned with national standards but also grows socially and emotionally through engaging, collaborative learning experiences.
