I have ample experience in the business sector as a business development and marketing professional with a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Sociology from University of Oregon (1999). I started out as a History major and quickly discovered that all the books I found the most interesting were in some way involved in the study of trends and groups of people throughout history. I had the privilege of spending two years of my college career at the University of Hawaii, Manoa where I was fortunate enough to study Sociology and Politics in a very diverse urban environment. But enough about my Jurassic past…let’s get to the fun stuff! I consider myself a lifetime learner with a growth mindset. I love learning anything I can through reading, exploring and working with diverse groups. Over the past 8 years, I have become heavily involved in volunteering in the community in various areas of education and helping at-risk youth. Reading and literacy have always been a passion and I am so excited to share my enthusiasm for books and magazines (yes! They still print those!) with all the families at Honors Academy of Literature and our N NV community. I am a strong believer in twenty-first-century learning and have discovered that I like to accompany most of my curriculum with a project. After watching some very successful programs over the past years and examining the way I like to teach, I have found that I am a project based teacher at heart.
My husband Nate and I have been together for over 17 years and are raising a read-a-holic daughter and an action-packed son in the Wingfield Springs Area. My reading interests are heavily influenced by my in-house tween experts. I still remember the day over 10 years ago when I asked Ms. Julie how I could ensure that my now 13-year-old would have a love for books like I do. I have since bought every box set of Warriors and tween series on the market. Not only do I feel successful in sharing my love for books with my family, I've read a lot of great Young Adult books/ series over the past decade! I also have a fond place in my heart for literature that I consider classic/ must read books for all young people. No matter how much action that Graphic Novel shelf is getting, I will be introducing all our scholars to some great "must reads". That being said, Graphic Novels are a great way to inspire scholars at all levels to love reading. I got my first Tintin book when I was 6 years old and collected the entire series. I spent many hours reading all of them repeatedly. So, you could say that I am a comic book nerd. My husband will attest that when we were in Spain, I squealed when we drove past the Comic Book Store with Tintin in the window and insisted we visit there before the Gothic Quarter. Then I made him lug all my Comic Books around the Gothic Quarter.
Like any busy family with children, juggling work and family activities is a daily challenge. In between all my activities, my hobbies include laundry, chauffeuring, Lego assembly, photography, herding my "baby" Great Dane Rex, assuring every comfort of both of our cats, skiing, brief naps and of course reading. I love helping wherever I can and I am a strong proponent for philanthropy. I believe it is important to help people in my community and in modeling and facilitating leadership and philanthropy in our community youth. I believe that our children should all learn that they are citizens in their community first, but also citizens of the world. I served for many years on the Executive Board of a local Parent Faculty Association and have become a successful fundraiser and veteran Social Media manager. I also serve as the current Executive Vice President for the local non-profit organization Project Sweet Dreams and am a voting member on a WCSD Curriculum Advisory Oversight Committee. I have also been an active Junior Achievement Volunteer in multiple schools in WCSD. I'm so pleased to be part of the Honors Academy of Literature family and can't wait to work with families and staff to make the Library a fun place to learn and hang out.
Come visit me in the library and "check-out" what we are doing!
