Ms. Connie Poulton
I am a graduate of Savanna Community High School in Illinois. I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Northern Illinois University. I have taken ongoing studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara; Temple University Extension; University of Maryland Extension; University of San Diego, California. I earned my Master of Education degree from Weber State University in Ogden, Utah; I continued graduate studies at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City and at the University of Nevada, Reno. I have participated in professional development opportunities through the U. S. Department of Education, the International Reading Association, and the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
My professional experience has been in the areas of both teaching and administration. I have taught students at a wide range of grade levels, including preschool, elementary grades, high school, adults in an Even Start family literacy program, and pre-service teacher education students. From 2005 through 2011, I served as the Nevada Reading First state co-director. I was also involved with the adoption of the Common Core State Standards, writing of the Striving Readers Comprehensive Literacy grant, and serving as a member of the Nevada State Literacy Team.
I have presented at the Light on Literacy Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah; Adult Education Conference in Logan, Utah; and the International Reading Association Conference in Reno, Nevada. I have also presented Reading First information to school administrators, district personnel, and classroom teachers in Reading First schools in Nevada.
Following retirement from the Nevada Department of Education, I was able to return to my passions of classroom teaching and literacy education. I am delighted to be the part-time reading specialist at the Honors Academy of Literature in its first year as a public charter school.
I live in Sparks, Nevada with my husband Jim and our cat Mazzy. We have two grown, married children, and their families are located in Spanish Springs and California. My husband’s career with the federal government gave us opportunities to live and work in Colorado; Nevada; California; Vicenza, Italy; Germersheim, Germany; Manteca, California; and Ogden, Utah. When Jim retired, we returned from Ogden to our home of 40 years in Sparks. We enjoy travel and all the friends we make along the way.
My hobbies include gardening, singing in choirs, and reading. I currently volunteer on the Nevada Reading Week Committee and enjoy participating in the Four Seasons Book Club through the Sparks Library.
